Over 70 million adults in the United States are single. The Census Bureau statistics show that people are choosing to marry less frequently, or to marry later, than in past generations.

St. Louis based psychologist Monica Moore studied women's flirting behavior and found that single women in a bar averaged 70 flirtatious acts per hour, compared with 19 in a restaurant and 10 in a library.

The American public overwhelmingly agrees that being physically attractive is a strong asset in modern society, yet only a minority of Americans say they wish that they themselves were more beautiful or handsome. And, despite the aging of the baby boom, and the apparent increase in a societal emphasis on beauty and appearance in recent years, the numbers of those who would like to be better looking or who would consider plastic surgery have not changed significantly since 1990. NEARLY TWO-THIRDS OF AMERICANS INTERVIEWED SAY 9/11 CHANGED THE WAY THEY DATE

NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2002—Nearly four months after the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, single members of online dating site Date.com say their approaches to dating remain markedly changed.


In an online survey conducted Dec. 30-Jan. 3, 62 percent of 11,927 total respondents said the events of Sept. 11 changed the way they date. Sixty percent, for example, said they go to singles bars or singles events less frequently since Sept. 11. Eighteen percent said they go to singles bars and events more frequently. More than three-quarters (77 percent) of total respondents said they spend more time dating online since Sept. 11. Results for all questions were virtually identical between male and female respondents.
